Christmas fashion and parties: get all decked out (go back »)

Fashion expert Phyllis Brasch Librach, president and founder of SydneysCloset.com, a specialty retailer selling special occasion dresses to plus size women, offers tips to take the stress out of dressing up for holiday parties. An intersting quotation: "Get into the holiday mood wearing deep jewel tones: navy, burgundy and emerald green. Or really shine in a silver, gold or bronze dress. But avoid head-to-toe glitter so you don't compete with the tinsel on the tree."
Holiday shopping, cooking and decorating create enough stress without the added anxiety of what to wear to the whirl of year-end holiday parties.
"It is possible to dress up -- not stress out -- out during the December social season," says Phyllis Brasch Librach, president and founder of SydneysCloset.com, a specialty retailer catering to women and teens shopping for a plus size dress for special occasions.
Librach shares these mature model trends and dress code tips to arrive in style this party season:
Hue cue:
"Nothing says party more than the perfect little dress and this season it need not be black," says Librach. "Get into the holiday mood wearing deep jewel tones: navy, burgundy and emerald green. Or really shine in a silver, gold or bronze dress. But avoid head-to-toe glitter so you don't compete with the tinsel on the tree."
Not ready to give up that little black dress? Show your cheer with small splashes of color or pattern: a red shawl, animal print shoes or an evening purse in a metallic neutral: gold, silver or bronze.
Dress to impress:
"Get out of the pants rut that rules your everyday wardrobe," says Librach. "Everyone needs a sexy cocktail dress or a long formal dress to be decked out for year-end social season. Holidays are special times to celebrate with family and friends you may see you only once a year. You want to look your very best to feel very merry, and a dress lets you do that instantly."
Feminine frills:
Holiday 2006 fashion focuses on feminine details that delight girls of all ages:
Bows of all sizes at the waist, the back, under the bust line and on shoes or purses.
Ruffles on skirts and soft gathers of fabric at the bodice, waist and hips.
Head-to-toe glamour:
Pump up the glitz with sparkly platforms or satin high heels.
Or slip on comfortable ballerina slippers in lush velvet or sensible sequined flats.
Pull hair back with a silk, satin or velvet headband, preferably with jewels.
SydneysCloset.com caters to women and teens sizes 14 to 44 shopping for a plus size dress for any special occasion: weddings, prom, homecoming, formal dances, military balls, cruises, Quinceanera, bar and bat mitzvahs, family celebrations and business events.
Still not sure what to wear? Follow these dress code tips from Sydney's Closet:
Informal house gathering: Go for fun not fancy. Play it down with a jean jacket over a little black dress pulled together with dressy boots and rhinestone drop earrings.
Happy Hour: For a quick fix from dull day to festive after dark swap the office pants and tailored blouse for a velvet or chiffon skirt paired with a cashmere sweater set. Trade the over-sized leather satchel for a pint-size evening bag with gem stones. Leave the clogs under the desk and clock out in sexy platforms.
Cocktail Party: slip on a knee or tea-length cocktail dress in sexy fabrics like silk or chiffon and shoes that show off your legs. Throw on a shawl or jacket for the conservative crowd at the office holiday party. Add a pearl necklace and earrings for pure perfection.
Holiday Gala: "black tie" or "black tie optional" means you get all decked out in a long, formal evening gown in rich fabrics like taffeta with glamorous details that dazzle: satin evening gloves, silk pumps or sparkling sandals and a sequined evening bag tiny enough to fit in your palm.
